Republican politician who became a U.S. senator from Nebraska in 2009 after serving the state as it's 38th Governor from 1999 to 2005.
He got his law degree from Creighton University School of Law, and joined the Nebraska State Bar Association in 1974.
In 2005, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as the Secretary of Agriculture, an office he served until 2007.
He married his second wife, Stephanie, in 1986.
He succeeded Chuck Hagel as a U.S. senator from Nebraska.
