Full back who played for seven teams from 1979 to 1998, including 144 appearances for Southampton from 1989 to 1994.
He played youth soccer with Sheffield United from 1974 to 1978, and with Gillingham from 1978 to 1979.
His final three seasons - at Fulham, Swansea City, and Brentford - he was a player-manager, before focusing solely on managing.
He had three children in his first marriage, and two children in his second marriage.
He was responsible for discovering Wayne Bridge in 1994, even though he was strictly a player at the time.
