Navy SEAL who fought in Afghanistan and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery in Operation Red Wings.
He led a four-man SEAL reconnaissance team to capture an Afghan warlord; however, his men were ambushed.
He had a U.S. warship and a post office named in his honor. His alma mater, Penn State, also dedicated a plaza to him.
He was born into an Irish-American family in Smithtown, New York.
He died during Operation Red Wings. Marcus Luttrel was the only survivor of the operation.
