He was selected in the 6th round, at number 172 overall, in the 2009 MLB Draft. He was first added to the professional team's 40-man roster on November 20, 2013.
On August 20, 2015, he hit what was the then-longest home run of the MLB season, with a 493-foot shot.
He has four older sisters. He was raised by his mother and father, who was a long-serving logistics officer for the US Army.
He has frequently played as the back-up centerfielder to Denard Span for the Washington Nationals.
