An American fiction writer and Yale University professor, he is best known for his 1998 work, The Hours, which won both the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. His other novels include Specimen Days (2005) and By Nightfall (2010).

Before Fame

He studied English literature at Stanford University and later earned an MFA in creative writing from the University of Iowa. He published some of his early short stories in the Paris Review and the Atlantic Monthly.

Trivia

He received a Guggenheim Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship.

Family Life

He was born in Ohio and raised in Southern California. He had a lengthy domestic partnership with psychologist Ken Corbett.
