Famous as the wife of New York Yankees legend Mickey Mantle, she co-wrote a 1996 biography of her husband titled Hero All His Life.
Born Merlyn Louise Johnson, she spent her youth in Cardin, Oklahoma. She met her Major League Baseball outfielder husband while they were both in high school: she was a cheerleader at Picher High School, and he was on the baseball team at nearby Commerce High School.
She completed an alcoholism treatment rehabilitation program at the Betty Ford Clinic.
Her more than four-decade-long marriage ended with Mickey Mantle's death in 1995 and produced sons named Mickey, Jr., Billy, David, and Danny.
