Menachem Begin

6th Prime minister of Israel from 1977 to 1983 who signed a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979, for which he and Anwar Sadat won the Nobel Prize for Peace.
During World War II he spent a year in the Pechora labor camps in the northern part of European Russia because he was accused of being an agent of British imperialism.
In 1981 he authorized the bombing of the Osirak nuclear plant in Iraq, which was was strongly criticized around the world and caused Israel to be rebuked by the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly in two separate resolutions.
His son, Benny Begin, followed in his footsteps and became a politician and member of the Knesset.
He was highly critical of Yasser Arafat and his policies.
