She attended Oberlin College and graduated in 1975.
She published There Is No Me Without You: One Woman’s Odyssey to Save Her Country’s Children in 2006 about the orphan crisis in Ethiopia, where four of her children were adopted from.
She married Don Samuel in 1979, and they had nine children together, five of whom were adopted from Bulgaria or Ethiopia.
