Maxime Weygand
War Hero
French military commander who fought in World War I and in World War II.
He was born in Brussels and was orphaned at birth. It was rumored that he was the illegitimate son of either Empress Carlota of Mexico or of the Empress' brother, Leopold II, and his Polish mistress.
He surrendered to the Nazis in World War II and collaborated with Germany in the establishment of the Vichy France regime.
He died in Paris, France.
He and Charles de Gaulle were important French military leaders.
