An American fiction writer, he is best known for works such as Free Agents (1984) and The Propheteers (1987). He also wrote the screenplay for the 1995 film, Roommates.
He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and subsequently taught creative writing at Rice University for nearly three decades.
He wrote the screenplay for The Air Up There, a film starring Kevin Bacon.
He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and he later settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
He and sports coach Jack Ramsay were both affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania.
