He was an avid baseball player in high school, but his hopes for a college baseball scholarship never came to fruition. He instead received a four-year music scholarship to Illinois' Millikin University.
He appeared in the well-received Christian film The Heart of Christmas in 2011.
He married Emily West in 2003. Together they have two daughters.
He wrote songs for artists like Billy Ray Cyrus before becoming an independent musician himself.
