A 38th-round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers out of high school, he instead attended Villanova University, where he was a star baseball player as well as All-American football player.
He was featured in the E:60 presentation Risking It All after donating bone marrow to a 15-month-old leukemia patient in Ukraine.
He was born to Marc and Kathleen Szczur and has an older brother.
He and Ross Ventrone were teammates on Villanova's 2009 national champion football team.
