He was drafted out of high school by the Chicago Cubs, but chose to attend the University of Florida on a scholarship instead.
In an Olympic game against China, he was hit in the head by a pitcher, after his teammate slid hard into China's backup catcher; the play resulted in a near brawl and several ejections.
He was born in Port Charlotte, Florida.
Reggie Smith was his teammate with the 2008 bronze medal-winning US team.
