Known as The Hammer, he was a light heavyweight division mixed martial artist who had a successful wrestling career as well. He won silver in Greco-Roman Wrestling and a gold at the 2001 Summer Deaflympics.
He made his MMA debut in 2005 in a fight against Robert Hitte that he won by TKO. He went on to win his first 4 fights before losing to Michael Bisping. He previously was a 3-time Division III National Champion in wrestling.
He has twice been involved what was deemed the fight of the night from UFC and once won knockout of the night.
He was born deaf from birth and introduced to wrestling by his stepfather, Michael Rich. He has a daughter from a failed marriage.
He defeated Tito Ortiz by unanimous decision to earn his 10th MMA victory in 2010.
