An Estonian poet and author who rose to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s, he is known for his short stories and for his socially and scientifically-themed poems. His literary works include Pasqueflower, Antidote for Sadness and Dance around the Steam Boiler.
He published his first collection of poetry in 1962. He later received the Friedebert Tuglas Award for his short story The Cross of Power.
His literary work focuses on the influence of Estonian culture upon the lives and decisions of individuals.
He was raised in Arula, Estonia.
He is a contemporary of American writer Kurt Vonnegut.
