She was a member of the left-wing National Awami Party before changing her political affiliation to the Awami League.
She also served as the minister of agriculture until 2001.
She has been married to Bajlur Rahman.
He was appointed the Minister of Agriculture by then-Prime Minister, Shiekh Hasina.
