Mateen Cleaves
Basketball Player
Former guard best known for leading the Michigan State Spartans to an NCAA Championship in 2000, earning the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player award on the way. He played in the NBA from 2000 to 2006 for the Detroit Pistons, Sacramento Kings, Cleveland Cavaliers and Seattle SuperSonics.
He was a McDonald's All-American during his senior year at Flint Northern High School.
At Michigan State, he was a two-time Big Ten Conference Player of the Year and a 1999 Consensus First Team All-American.
His brother was tragically killed in 2001.
He was named the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player a year before Shane Battier would win the same award.
