Maryam Monsef

Afghan-Canadian politician who was sworn in as the current Minister of Status of Women in the 29th Canadian Ministry. Previously she served as the Minister of Democratic Institutions and President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada until January 10, 2017.
She immigrated to Canada from Iran as a child and went on to graduate from Trent University with a B.S. in Biology and Psychology.
Her first political position came after she won the mayorship of her hometown of Peterborough in 2014.
Her father was killed on the Iran-Afghanistan border in 1988 and her uncle disappeared from the University of Kabul when he was a student.
She's served in various positions working with Justin Trudeau.
