Mary Hallock Foote

A turn-of-the-century author and illustrator, she is best known for her short stories set in mining towns in the American West.
She studied art in New York City at the New Cooper Institute School of Design for Women.
She developed a reputation as a sophisticated hostess to dignitaries and celebrities.
She married Arthur De Wint Foote in 1876; they later had three children.
Her life story inspired Angle of Repose, a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Wallace Stegner.
