Nicknamed Pops, he was a 3-time WBC Light Heavyweight Champion, and won a bronze medal at the 1972 Olympics in Munich.
He won the 1971 National Golden Gloves Light Heavyweight Championship as an amateur.
He was named The Ring magazine's Comeback Fighter of the Year in 1984.
He was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana.
He was knocked out by Michael Spinks one and a half minutes into the fourth round on March 28, 1981.
