A Holocaust survivor and nonfiction writer, he became known for his bestselling memoir, For Those I Loved. He published a second autobiographical work titled Life Arises Out of Darkness and a third called Au Nom de Tous les Hommes.
After emigrating from his native Poland to America at the end of World War II, he became an antiques salesman.
He wrote all of his works in French.
His first memoir was written not only in response to his experience of the Holocaust, but also as a means of coping with the deaths of his first wife and children in a 1970 blaze.
Actor Michael York starred in the 1980s miniseries version of For Those I Loved.
