She started her career by acting in independent films in 1991.

Her sister is actress Lesley Ann Machado. She married Oliver Mayer in July 2006. Her daughter, Giselle Rodriguez-Forte, is also an actress.
She played William Levy's mother in Tyler Perry's 2014 comedy-drama film The Single Moms Club.
