Best remembered as Jim Nash on NBC's Please Don't Eat the Daisies and as Bill Hooten on ABC's Guestward, Ho!, he also had a career as a film actor and screenwriter, starring in and penning the 1982 comedy film Savannah Smiles.
Early in his acting career, he appeared in episodes of Gunsmoke and The Inner Flame.
He wrote a 2010 play titled Amorous Crossings.
His first marriage, to costumer Beatrice Ammidown, resulted in three daughters: Savannah, Marisa, and actress Penelope Ann Miller. In 1976, he married Barbara Stanger.
He wrote the screenplay for the 1995 Keanu Reeves feature A Walk in the Clouds.
