Russian-Jewish sculptor known for the psychological complexity of his historical images. He sculpted Mephistopheles, finished in 1884.
He studied in the Imperial Academy of Arts at St. Petersburg.
His sculpture, Ivan the Terrible, made a large impression on connoisseurs of art and was controversial.
He married Jelena Antokolski in 1872.
He and Anna Golubkina are both sculptors from Russia.
