She was raised in a poor area stricken with crime, which she credits with motivating her to achieve excellence.
She was ranked as the twentieth most powerful woman in the world by Forbes magazine in 2012.
Her full name is Maria das Graças Silva Foster. She married Colin Foster and has two children.
She was nominated to serve on the Petrobras Board of Directors by the President of Brazil Dilma Rouseff.
