An Austrian/Swiss film actress who has starred in several movies including Gervaise, The Brothers Karamazov, and has even starred in American films such as the 1978 adaptation of Superman and The Hanging Tree. In 1956, she was awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at Venice Film Festival for her performance in Gervaise.
She attended her mother's acting school in Vienna.
Her brother Maximilian's 2002 documentary film My Sister Maria was her final on-screen appearance.
Her mother was Margarethe Nordberg, an actress who taught at an acting school, and her father was Hermann Ferdinand Schell, a swiss poet and novelist.
In 1959, she co-starred with Gary Cooper in The Hanging Tree.
