In her early adulthood years, she worked as a photographer's assistant to Stanley Toogood.
She succeeded Arthur Foulkes as Governor General of the Bahamas.
She grew up in South Andros and Nassau, Bahamas, as the daughter of Viola and Reuben McKenzie. Her nearly fifty-year marriage to Lynden Pindling resulted in four children.
Her husband Lynden Pindling, the first Prime Minister of the Bahamas, held office from 1973 until 1992 and earned the nickname of "Father of the Nation."
