Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright who wrote the 1995 play Wit and won the 2001 Emmy Award for Outstanding Made for Television Film.
She graduated from a Quaker-run school in Washington called Sidwell Friends School.
She donated her Pulitzer Prize money to a foundation dedicated to helping doctors with their bedside manner.
Her father was a newspaper columnist and her mother was a social worker.
She won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, as did The Pittsburgh Cycle playwright August Wilson.
