He was born in West Germany and came to America on a Fulbright Scholarship in 1984.
He was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Music Video Filmmaker Association in 2001.
He married songwriter Dyan Humes-Nispel.
His video for the song Killer/Papa Was a Rolling Stone by George Michael won a MTV Best European Video Award in 1993.
