He started out playing in many different bands when he was young before moving to Nashville where he signed a deal with Columbia Records.
He has created his own record label, Velvet Armadillo, on which he released many of his own albums.
He was born to a career diplomat in the District of Columbia. His son is singer Levi Hummon.
He has co-written songs with many different country artists, including Tim McGraw.
