Marc Copland
Pianist
Jazz artist who became a successful group leader and solo performer. He was known for a wholly unique and original approach to making music.
He cut his chops in Philadelphia's early 1960s jazz scene as a saxophonist, but grew frustrated with the instrument in the 1970s because of its limitations.
He worked hard to restore the jazz duo to some of its past glory, using the format on his recordings from 2000 until 2005.
His family recognized his talent early on, and he started studying piano at age seven, only to give it up when he was 10 for saxophone training.
He was a member of the Chico Hamilton Quartet alongside John Abercrombie.
