Notable for her roles in such successful Hindi films as Chhupa Rustam: A Musical Thriller, China Gate, and Aashiq Awara, Kulkarni ended her decade-long acting career in 2002 amid a series of scandals.
She entered the entertainment industry by acting in the Tamil movie Nanbargal; she appeared in her first Bollywood feature, Tirangaa, in 1992.
Her work in the hit 1993 film Aashiq Awara earned her a Filmfare Best New Face Award.
Born and raised in Mumbai, India, she and her sisters grew up speaking the Marathi language.
She appeared with Salman Khan in the popular 1995 film Karan Arjun.
