Poet whose best-known work, Through the Eyes of Childhood, was dedicated to family members who had been killed by the Nazis. Her other works include Lider and Gezangen.

Before Fame

She left her native Poland for New York City during the 1920s. While living in New York, she studied at Hunter College and at the Jewish Teachers Seminary.

Trivia

Her six volumes of Yiddish poetry explore Holocaust themes.

Family Life

She was born in the Polish-Ukraine region of Galicia to Hasidic Jewish parents. She was married twice: to Aaron Rappaport and, after his death, to Moshe Besser.

Associated With

Many of Lee's family members died in the Holocaust, as did their diarist Anne Frank.
