National Film Award-winning actress who starred in some of the most acclaimed Bengali films of all time, including Mahanagar, Kapurush, and Charulata.
She performed in stage productions as a child and made her film debut in 1950's Kankantala Light Railway.
She won the National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in Dibratrir Kabya in 1970.
She and her sister, Manjari, were raised by their mother in Kolkata.
She garnered the most praise for her work with director Satyajit Ray, including 1963's Mahanagar.
