Madeleine L'Engle
Young Adult Author
American author of young adult fiction whose popular novel, A Wrinkle in Time, won the 1963 Newbery Medal. Her other award-winning works include Many Waters and A Swiftly Tilting Planet.
She wrote her first story at age five and began keeping a journal at age eight. In 1941, she graduated from Smith College.
Most of her works include themes of religion and science.
Her parents were named Madeleine and Charles Wadsworth Camp. She married stage actor, Hugh Franklin, in 1946; the couple's daughter, Josephine, was born the following year.
She and Judy Blume both wrote young adult classics.
