An award-winning reporter who became a fixture on the BBC as its Chief International Correspondent; her reports were featured on both radio and television.
She graduated from Queen's University at Kingston in 1980, after having written for the university newspaper.
She received the 2010 Peabody and David Bloom Awards for her film on maternal mortality in Afghanistan.
Her sister, Andrea Doucet, became a noted Canadian professor of sociology.
She was a descendent of one of explorer Samuel de Champlain's shipmates.
