She made her acting debut in 1876, in a summer stock theater production, and went on to have an acclaimed career on Broadway and in touring productions.
In Hollywood, roles as unlikable women led her to the voice part of the wicked Queen in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
She was born in Nashville, Tennessee.
She appeared in MGM's 1935 adaptation of Charles Dickens' famed novel A Tale of Two Cities.
