Formed a duo with his equally talented brother Willi in 1866. The two were known for their mastery of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven.
He studied at Leipzig with Bohemian composer and piano virtuoso Ignaz Moscheles and German composer Carl Reinecke.
He and his brother became known in many parts of Europe for their tours, including annual appearances in London and Liverpool, as well as traversing Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and France.
He was born to famed composer and conductor Károly Thern who trained him and his brother early on.
He and his brother were masters of Franz Liszt's repertoire, and the composer would often come to their concerts.
