French Marxist philosopher who developed ideas such as overdetermination and the epistemological break.
He studied at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. He spent time in a German prisoner of war camp for much of World War II.
He wrote two autobiographies.
He married Helene Rytman in 1946, whom he strangled during one of his fits of mental illness that he struggled with his entire life.
He was influenced by Karl Marx.
