In 2005, this Republican Party politician began serving Texas' first congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. In early 2015, he sought to become Speaker of the House, but was defeated by the incumbent speaker John Boehner.
After graduating from Texas A&M University with a bachelor's degree in history, he earned his J.D. from Baylor Law School.
While in Congress, he served on the Judiciary and National Resources committees.
He grew up in Mount Pleasant, Texas, as the child of Louis Buller Gohmert and Erma Sue Brooks Gohmert. His marriage to Kathy Gohmert produced three daughters.
In the early 2000s, then-Texas Governor Rick Perry appointed Gohmert to the position of Chief Justice of the 12th Court of Appeals of Texas.
