Pioneer in the female country singer-songwriter movement who released hits including "Mama Spank." She wrote songs for her daughter, including "If I Kiss You (Will You Go Away)."
Starting at a time when women were shut out of Nashville, she found early success with hits like "Just Between the Two of Us," which crossed over into the Top 40.
She wrote the hit tune "My Friends Are Gonna Be Strangers," which made Merle Haggard a household name.
She and her husband Casey co-founded the Nashville Songwriters Association International. Her daughter Lynn is also a country singer.
Chet Atkins signed Anderson to his RCA Records label, with whom he recorded many well-received songs throughout the 1960s.
