Widely known as the subject of Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece painting the Mona Lisa. Her portrait was commissioned by her husband during the Italian Renaissance in the 16th century. The painting was featured in the 2020 video game Animal Crossing New Horizons.
She grew up in Florence as part of the aristocratic Gherardini family.
Her portrait has long been housed in the famed Louvre museum in Paris where it is part of a French national collection of pieces. Her portrait's finish was interrupted by Leonardo da Vinci receiving a commission for his 1506 painting The Battle of Anghiari.
She was the eldest of seven children.
The Mona Lisa name of her portrait was derived from writings done by Giorgio Vasari.
