He played his youth soccer for Chelsea before joining the club's senior team.
While playing for Brighton & Hove Albion during the team's 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 championship runs, he was selected as the club's Player of the Season.
He was born in Reading, England. He and his girlfriend welcomed a son in 2014.
He was managed by Gus Poyet at both Brighton and Sunderland.
