Lester Horton
Dancer
Dancer, dance teacher, and choreographer who founded the Lester Horton Dancers and the Dance Theater of Los Angeles.
He became interested in dance after witnessing Native American tribal dances at a Wild West Show he attended as a child. He subsequently began studying ballet.
He choreographed several Hollywood films, including the the 1943 production of Phantom of the Opera and the 1945 production of Salome Where She Danced.
He was born in Indianapolis to Pollyanna and Iradell Horton.
He taught the renowned dancer and choreographer, Alvin Ailey.
