Former Secretary of Defense under President Bill Clinton who is most their for introducing the controversial 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy which banned soldiers from being openly gay in the military. He was also Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Wisconsin's 1st district from 1971 to 1993.
He received a Masters in economics from Oxford University, where he was also a Rhodes Scholar.
He was blamed for the loss of the Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia, which is also referred to as Black Hawk Down.
He had no children.
He was appointed Secretary of Defense by President Bill Clinton at the beginning of the latter's first term.
