Leopold Auer
Violinist
Hungarian-born composer, conductor, music teacher, and violinist. He performed at Carnegie Hall and taught at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and at the St. Petersburg Conservatory.
He studied violin in Budapest and Vienna and later held concert master positions in both Dusseldorf and Hamburg.
He was one of the most respected violin teachers of his generation; his pupils included Toscha Seidel, Mischa Elman, and Efrem Zimbalist.
He was born to a Jewish family in Hungary. His musical career later took him to Germany, Russia, and the United States.
Fellow composer and musician Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky praised Auer's skill as a violinist.
