A legend of Notre Dame football, he was only the second lineman in school history to win the Heisman Trophy.
At 6'4" and 245 pounds, he was outstanding on the pass rush and blocking, helping the Irish to three consecutive perfect seasons. He finished his career at Notre Dame 36-0-2.
After graduating from Notre Dame, he was the first pick in the NFL draft, selected by the Detroit Lions, who went on to win NFL Championships with him in 1952, 1953 and 1957.
He grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He was the first and only player to win the Heisman, the national championship, and be drafted first in the NFL draft, until Cam Newton repeated it in 2011.
