American poet, author, and literary critic known for The Life of the Dead, A Trojan Ending, Under the Mind's Watch, and other works. A modernist writer, she is associated with the Tennessee-based Fugitive group of poets.

Before Fame

She was born Laura Reichenthal and was the daughter of Austrian-Jewish immigrants. Remaining in her home state of New York throughout her college years, she studied at Cornell University.

She married Louis R. Gottschalk, had an affair with poet Robert Graves, and later wed Schuyler Jackson.
