Laura Lippman
Novelist
A Georgia-born author of detective fiction, she is best known for her series of Baltimore-based novels featuring reporter-turned-private investigator, Tess Monaghan. Her non-serial works include What the Dead Know (2007) and Every Secret Thing (2003).
After graduating from Wilde Lake High School in Columbia, Maryland, she worked as a reporter for the San Antonio Light and the Baltimore Sun.
She finally cracked the New York Times bestseller list in 2007 with the publication of What the Dead Know. She was also a recipient of the Agatha, Anthony, Edgar, Nero, Gumshoe, and Shamus awards.
She was born to Baltimore Sun writer, Theo Lippman, Jr., and Baltimore City Public School System librarian, Madeline Lippman. Her family was of Jewish and Scotch-Irish descent. In 2008, she married David Simon.
It was rumored that her 2003 novel, Every Secret Thing, would be developed into a film starring Frances McDormand.
