Classical Indian singer whose songs have been featured in many films and she was the recipient of the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor.
She started acting and singing in musicals at age five. Eight years later, her father died from heart disease and a family friend helped her get involved in music and acting.
She held the record for most recordings in the world, with more than 25,000, according to the Guinness Book of World Records from 1974 to 1991.
She was born in Indore, India alongside siblings named Asha, Usha Hridaynath and Meena.
She provided songs for the film Kabhi Khush Kabhie Gham... in 2001, which starred Amitabh Bachchan.
